Socialites are playing chess on "The Real Housewives of New York City." In 1990, according to the US Chess Federation, only 4% of chess players were women. Out in the world, chess' resurgence has been accompanied by a wave of new clubs and events. I made a pilgrimage to the Marshall Chess Club, a 109-year-old institution in Greenwich Village. The following evening, I went to an East Village bar and found a very different scene at Club Chess.

It’s Always Summer Somewhere

On a recent trip to Melbourne, several locals described the city as Australia’s version of New York. Melbourne might not be as pretty as Sydney, which has a beach culture similar to that of Los Angeles, but they said that it was more interesting. Low-rise streetscapes and communities of artists and hipsters can make parts of Melbourne feel like Brooklyn. In late December and early January — summertime in Melbourne — the place was sleepier than expected for what is technically Australia’s most populous city. Fitzroy, known as a hipper area, was buzzier, even though its two main thoroughfares, Brunswick Street and Smith Street, weren’t exactly bustling.

They acknowledge the hurdles to rearranging a diplomatic puzzle that has bedeviled world leaders and their envoys for decades. But, Ms. Pundak said, “It’s crucial to have those conversations right now, as they affect immediately what happens in Gaza. The answer, Ms. Pundak said, was neither a single state nor a simple division into two. “Eighty years ago, would you have expected German hipsters to live in France?” Ms. Pundak said. Palestinians living in Israel would vote in Palestinian elections; Israelis living in a future Palestine would vote in Israel.

It Might Be Time to Consider Timisoara

Families stroll and savor gelato cones as bike couriers whiz by. Pensioners relax on benches near manicured flower beds while earbud-wearing hipsters walk dogs and children chase pigeons by a fountain laden with bronze fish. The scene in Victory Square in Timisoara, Romania, is quintessentially European — modern meets Old World. Romanians and history buffs know Timisoara for its leading role in the bloody Romanian revolution in December 1989, when local protests set off a nationwide wave that toppled dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. As I gaze at vibrant Victory Square, it’s hard to envision 100,000 anti-Communist protesters crammed together during those fateful days.

NABLUS, West Bank—Almost anywhere you go here, pastry aficionados are at odds: Who makes the best knafeh? Knafeh is a warm, salty-sweet dessert usually made from melted cheese and pastry dough, with a sugary syrup poured over the top and a sprinkle of chopped pistachios. It is a cultural touchstone for Palestinian identity and a calorie bomb for Tel Aviv hipsters with late-night munchies.

Movehub compiled a list of the most hipster cities in America based on the number of tattoo parlors, vegan stores, microbreweries, and thrift shops per 100,000 residents as well as rent demand. Vancouver, Washington, scored the top spot with its wide selection of microbreweries, thrift stores, and vegan restaurants. AdvertisementWhile cities like Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, are known hubs for hipsters, smaller cities across the country are proving they have even more bohemian street cred. To prove that point, MoveHub created a US Hipster Index to rank cities based on five factors that are inherently tied to the hipster movement. Here are the 20 most hipster cities in the country — and why they made the cut.

They’re the work of bots and trolls, and one of the most skilled countries at deploying them is Russia. During the 2016 presidential election, suspected Russian operators created bots on Twitter to promote hashtags like #WarAgainstDemocrats. Facebook is one common platform for Russian trolls and bots, which, in 2016, used fake accounts to influence U.S. elections. Facebook believes that ads on divisive issues created by Russian trolls were shown to Americans over four million times before the elections. Federal investigators and experts believed Russian trolls created Facebook groups like Blacktivist, which reposted videos of police beatings, or another, Secured Borders, which organized anti-immigrant rallies in real life.
